The University of Newcastle is partnering with Callaghan College to create opportunities that inspire young people to pursue STEMM education and careers. Together we are building pathways that benefit students, encourage participation in STEMM, and creating our region’s next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
Callaghan launches new partnership with University of Newcastle
Callaghan College students and our partner primary schools will benefit from an exciting new era in STEMM education following the official launch of the Callaghan College and University of Newcastle Academy of STEMM Excellence at the 2026 Callaghan College Inspire Awards.
Announcing as part of National Science Week, The Academy brings together Callaghan College and the University of Newcastle in an innovative partnership designed to create a seamless pathway from early learning through to higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).
Built on the shared vision, "Together, we are shaping the future for the Hunter region powered by STEMM education and training," the Academy will connect students with world-class university expertise, cutting-edge research facilities and industry partners, preparing them for the workforce of tomorrow while strengthening the Hunter's future as a hub for innovation.
The launch marks a significant milestone in strengthening STEMM education across the Hunter and positions the Callaghan College and University of Newcastle Academy of STEMM Excellence as a leading model for collaboration between schools, higher education and industry.
The official announcement was made jointly by University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, and Executive Director, Public Schools, Regional North, Tim McCallum, during the College's annual Inspire Awards celebration at the University’s Great Hall on 12 August.
The Academy is creating an educational ecosystem that leverages the strengths of both institutions to deliver innovative learning experiences from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 12 and beyond.
The partnership focuses on five key priorities:

Enhancing STEMM education by integrating university expertise, research and resources into school learning.

Creating clear pathways from school to university and STEMM careers through strong industry partnerships.

Building the capability of teachers and pre-service educators.

Supporting regional economic growth and innovation.

Ensuring equitable access to high-quality STEMM opportunities for all students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
As part of the launch, the partnership also announced the appointment of the NSW Department of Education's first STEM Project Officer to be based at a university. Callaghan College science teacher Rachael Newell has commenced in the role, strengthening connections between university researchers, facilities and students across the Callaghan learning community.
